Things Do Get Better
Chapter 4
I ran downstairs into the kitchen with the envelope in my hand. "Has anyone been here looking for me today?" I asked the Johnsons. They looked at each other. Then Mrs. Johnson said, "No. Why do you ask?" "Did you hear anyone come into the house?" "Nope. Why are you asking those questions?" I just stood there trying to figure out how he could have gotten in the house without the Johnsons knowing it. "You sure no one came here looking for me?" I asked. "Yes. We're sure. Is everything all right?" "Yeah. Everything's fine," I said. I turned around and walked towards the living room. Before I entered, I folded up the envelope, which obviously had a letter inside, and put it in my pocket.
I walked into the living room and asked, "Ready to go?" "Yes! I'm starving!" said Joey. "Where's the nearest Pizza Hut?" asked JC. "Over by McDonalds," I replied. "OK. Let's go!" said Chris.
We started walking to Pizza Hut. The guys were goofing off again. I tried to concentrate on what they were doing. But, my mind kept going back to my problems. I lost my job, I got kicked out of my housing source, and now he found me. "At least he found me now, when I have to move out," I thought.
We finally got to Pizza Hut and found a booth. We ordered a couple of pizzas and some cokes. Right away, Chris started telling another story. I couldn't pay attention very well. I had too many things on my mind. "Yes! Pizza!" said Joey as he stuffed the first slice into his mouth. I just laughed as I took a bite out of my slice. "Where am I gonna find a new place by tomorrow afternoon?" I thought, barely listening to the guys.
"KATIE!!" they yelled. I jumped, startled by them yelling my name so loud. "What?" I asked. "You keep spacing out on us," said Justin. "Yeah. You sure there isn't anything wrong?" asked Lance. "The only thing wrong is I lost my job today. That's all," I said, only telling part of the truth. "It sure doesn't seem like it," said Chris. "I think there's something else wrong," said JC. I just looked at him trying not to cry. He was right. There's a lot more than just losing my job. A lot more.
