Things Do Get Better
Chapter 3
Mr. and Mrs. Johnson and I walked into the kitchen. We each sat down in a chair. I could hear the guys talking and joking around in the other room. "Katie, I don't know how to say this. So, I'm just going to come out and say it," Mr. Johnson paused, then said, "You have to move out." I sat there, shocked at what he just said. "Why do I have to move out?" I asked. "Because you haven't paid your weekly rent in 4 months." "I'm sorry. But, I promise I'll pay as soon as I can." "You've said that many times before and you still haven't paid. We pay some of the bills with your rent money. And since you're behind in your rent, we're behind in our bills. You need to move out, so a more responsible person can move in. One who can PAY the rent ON TIME," explained Mr. Johnson. I just sat there, thinking of what I was gonna do. Then Mr. Johnson said, "You need to move out by tomorrow afternoon." "What?!" "The new person will be moving in tomorrow evening. So, you need to be out before then," said Mr. Johnson. "OK. Fine. I'll be out by tomorrow afternoon," I said quietly. I got up and walked out into the living room where *NSYNC was. They all stopped talking when they saw that I was upset. "What's wrong?" asked Lance as he came over to me. "Umm…nothing. I'll go get changed. Be right back," I said. Then I went upstairs to my room. I quickly changed into jeans and a flannel shirt. As I was about to leave my room, I saw something on my dresser that caught my eye. I walked over and picked up the envelope that had my name on it. I recognized the handwriting right away. I then realized he had found me.
