Things Do Get Better
Chapter 2
I looked up and saw 5 guys standing next to me with concerned expressions. It was none other than *NSYNC. "Yeah. I'm fine," I said as I wiped my eyes. "You sure?" asked Lance. I nodded. "We saw what happened back at McDonalds," said Justin. "You did?" I asked, a little surprised that they were there. "You're sure you'll be OK? That guy was a little harsh," said JC. "Yeah, I'll be fine. I just dunno what I'm gonna do. I needed that job," I said. They looked at me with concerned faces. Then Chris asked, "Were you really late everyday since you started that job?" "Yep. Everyday for about 5˝ months." "That's a lot of times being late," said Joey. "Yeah, I know," I said with a slight smile. "I'm just surprised it took him this long to fire me." "You hungry?" asked JC. "I am!" said Joey. "We know you're hungry, Joey," said Justin. "Kinda. Why?" I asked. "Well, cuz we were gonna go eat anyway, so I was just wondering of you wanted to come with us, since you don't have to work," said JC. "I dunno," I said. "Oh c'mon," said Lance. "We know you wanna," said Justin. "Well…OK. I guess I'll come," I said. "Great!" said Joey. "But, don't you guys wanna know who I am?" I asked. "Yeah. I guess," said Chris. "That's what I thought. I'm Katie," I said. "Hi Katie. I'm…" I interrupted Justin. "I know who you guys are." "Oh OK," said Justin, smiling. "Do you think we could stop at my house first? I don't wanna go out to eat in my work clothes," I said. "Where do you live?" asked Lance. "Not far from here. Just a short walk," I said. "Well, let's start walking. I'm hungry," said Joey. I laughed as I started walking. The guys followed.
"So, are your parents gonna be mad that you lost your job?" asked JC. I hesitated. "What should I tell them?" "Umm…no. I highly doubt they'd care," I said. "Oh. Did they not want you to get the job or something?" he asked. "No, I HAD to get the job. It's kinda a long story. I don't really wanna get into it now," I said. "Oh OK," he said. I could tell by the sound of his voice that he knew something was up.
As we walked on the, guys talked and goofed off. I was half-listening. I was trying to figure out what I was going to say to the Johnsons, my landlords. They were gonna wonder why I'm home early. "Hellooo…" I was interrupted from my thoughts as Chris was waving his hands in front of my face. "Huh? What?" I asked. "Where do you wanna go eat?" asked Joey. "Anywhere but McDonalds," I answered. "We figured that," said Lance. "How about pizza?" asked Joey. "Fine by me," I said. "OK. Pizza it is," said Chris. "OK. We're here," I said as we walked up to my house.
I opened the door and yelled, "Hello! I'm home early!" Mr. and Mrs. Johnson walked into the entryway with confused expressions on their faces. "You guys can come in," I said to *NSYNC. They walked in as Mr. Johnson said, "Katie, we need to talk to you." "Uh oh," I thought. I had a bad feeling about this.
