Things Do Get Better
Chapter 13
I told them the whole story. When I finished, Heidi said, "Why didn't you ever tell us?" "I dunno. If I truly thought you needed to know, I would've told you earlier," I replied. "I never would've guessed you, of all people, had a rough life," said Taisia. "Yeah, and then your dad finding you. Geez," said Lacey. "That stuff is all over with. I'm past it. I've got a whole new life now. I don't need to worry about my past anymore. I have new best friends and I live with 2/5 of *NSYNC. It can't get any better than this," I said. "Well, true," said Heidi. "So, c'mon," I said, heading for my bedroom door. "We can't leave those guys alone now, can we?" "NO!" they all yelled and ran downstairs. I laughed. "Wait up!" I yelled, running after them. I caught up to them right before entering the den.
Chris and Justin were playing video games. Joey was sitting on the recliner cheering them on. JC was at one end of the couch watching, and Lance was at the other end flipping through a magazine. We walked in and sat on the floor in front of JC and Lance. "I'm playing winner," said Joey. "Go Justin!" said Heidi. "Yeah, c'mon Justin!" said Joey. "Hey! Someone cheer for me!" said Chris. "Go Chris," I said, not being very enthusiastic about it. "Gee, thanks," he said. "You're welcome!" I said, cheerfully. "I won!" said Justin. "That's cuz you have your own private fan club in here," said Chris, turning around and sticking his tongue out at me. "What? You didn't like my cheering?" I said, pouting. He stuck his tongue out again. "No," he said. I laughed. "My turn!" said Joey, taking the controller from Chris. "Anyone want something to drink?" I asked, getting up. "No," they all said in unison. "Oookay," I said and walked out and into the kitchen.
I grabbed a coke and walked back into the den. Taisia was sitting next to Joey cheering him on and Heidi was sitting next to Justin cheering him on. Chris was sitting in the recliner. Lacey was sitting next to JC having a small conversation. I went over and sat between Lacey and Lance. I sighed. "What?" asked Lance, not looking up from the magazine. "Nothing," I said. The phone rang. "I got it," said Chris, picking up the phone. "Hello?…Who is this?…Umm, OK…Just a minute," he said into the phone. "Katie, it's for you. It's some guy."
